Wizard of Oz is a technique to simulate the behavior of a system by using a human operator

The goal of the experiment is to understand the limitations that the user experience may have and to gather feedback to guide the development during the initial stages, where there is more flexibility to change the technology and its behavior.

Composing Letters with a simulated listening typewriter is an experiment made in the 80 in which IBM researchers expose the learned lessons after testing a voice recognition system without ever having it built. The voice orders was interpreted by a human operator that was able to type fast in response:
